fire up

It’s that time of the year again, that’s right the 2004 bloggies. Just like last year I find myself rummaging through the list clicking on some of the sites, hardly recognising others, seeing a few eye-openers, and then seeing a handful of the sites I love. Even though the prize-pool is small it’s still quite a collection of websites there, I think the site that really stuck out the most was mezzoblue, which as scriptygoddess put “I feel kind of funny saying this - but I’ve never seen Dave’s site before.

enlarge:blast furnace business cardApart from being the bloggies, it’s also the annual (semi-annual, who really knows?) BLAST furnace reunion show. Similar to the event that occurred in aug and jan of last year I’m hoping that the gig is an insane-success. Usually half the band is blind drunk and the other half are just holding on with all their might as the BLAST furnace roller-coaster rip-roars through all the things that music has to offer. Like always the band is also changing its line-up slightly, we’re re-acquiring a guitarist, dropping an electronics-expert, scoring a moog-ist, and giving a homeless, harmonica player somewhere to be for an evening. We’re expecting fatalities and I’m hoping it’s not my equipment, last August’s show saw the demise of a bass-drum as it was introduced to the ass-end of a bass-guitar.

Two nights ago also saw Melange headline down in a basement pub and even though we weren’t on until midnight and ended up hanging around for multiple hours, the evening was a lot of fun - a good reminder of how much I do like the boys in my band.

blog it forward

I know i do these sort of entries all the time, and obviously for the casual reader the links and the love and the hugs and the admiration must be seen as the epitome of boring-blogging, but this time i have a legit reason to pass on the love .. Blog-it-forward IV by Buzz is an event he holds every month (i’m gathering) whereby your encouraged to post about some other blogs on your blogroll (or dailies as i like to call them) and link them and say what makes them worthy of your daily reading time.

Even though i did this only recently i still have to give my “big-ups” to:

Echoica.net : Because god-damn, she was the girl that basically pulled me out of LJ land and into having 110% respect for domain-hosted blogs.. besides that she also took me under her wing for a good 6-12 months and opened my eyes to the communities that are floating out there in the ether!

Jinabolton.com : God damn girl .. i remember your early blogs, and i still get drop-jaw when i see your new stuff, your improving in leaps-and-bounds and it makes me so proud that i might in some way have been involved with your evolution into a terrific web-designer .. i’m so happy you got your job.

and now for a weird one, but totally deserving, the girl who got me onto the blog-it-forward:

Intensify.org : Rachel has had a really good looking blog for as long as i’ve been visiting and i’ve found myself looking forward to seeing updates everytime i visit .. i can’t wait to see how her blog evolves in the future.. but i’m sure i’ll still be visiting.

Added the lil links box down there to the right which i’ll be using as a bin of miscellaneous linkage stuff .. i’ve incorporated it with a seperate MT blog and the bookmarklet as shown over here at scriptgoddess.com .. so my browser has a button in it now.. which i press (when i’m at the page which i want to add to my links box) .. and voila.. an MT dialog pops up and i can just add the link as an entry .. *boom*

honours year 2004

today was an interesting one.
Last year after i found i didn’t get a job with Motorola i went and enrolled in computer-science honours .. and this morning was our first meeting of the SCISSEC post-grad students… everyone there was really cheery and after a few moments silence in the supervisors room we started chatting and it was good. There’s a couple of PhD students a few masters students, and a few other Honours guys .. all of whom seemed totally clued on to what they were doing and the direction they were taking with their studies .. i felt like i was surrounded by genius’ (which i suppose i was), and naturally i felt a little daunted by this.
Anyway, we all introduced ourselves and talked about what we were doing and what we had done in the past, and compared to the higher post-grad guys i felt like i hadn’t really done anything, but they seemed more than willing to help so that was great.
So what does my next 12 months look like? shitload of reading, coursework (incl assignments and that), lit-reviews of all my reading, paper submission, hopefully paper presentation, conferences hopefully (hopefully also paid for as well) .. and basically getting as dirty as i can into Beowulf’s .. possibly starting by setting up a small openmosix (using livecd’s) cluster at home on my 4-5 computers.

That’s enough from me, but before i go.. i can’t forget to mention that my thoughts and wishes are with Michelle especially with all that’s going on in her life.. i hope things smooth out soon hon *hug*

oh, and on a completely different luck-scale congrats go out to Jina with all the good stuff that’s been going on lately with her.

the world shrunk

got back from my little holiday this morning .. proceeded to throw my bags into my room.. chuck on a DVD and fall asleep on the couch.

Sometime afterwards i awoke to the end of the movie and looked over and realised that i had picked up my new monitor sometime before lunch.. .. i had left the poor bugger in it’s box for long enough, so i un-packed it.
It’s a sad tale, the story of my previous monitor. I’ve had it for .. as long as i’ve had a PC (me as in me, not me as in family) .. so to de-throne the lil 17″ for this new Flat-screened 19″ monstrosity was getting fairly close to a tear-jerker of an experience, but i muscled up, put my old blurry, occasional-yellow-flickering 17″ on the ground, and put this Philips 109B in it’s place. The world seems so much stranger from 1600×1200 ..

after having a quick peek inside of photoshop i got down to the real test.. which is playing a game (naturally).. so i jumped on one of the local Enemy Territory servers and proceeded to frag away happily for a couple of hours .. it’s good to be home.. i’m browner i’m tireder i’m looking forward to things calming down again.
