What can I say about the Cog album? The New Normal certainly feels like a step up from the previous Just Visiting EPs - but not exactly a step up. Probably like a step up and a bit to the left.

I’m not ashamed to admit that one of the things I enjoy most about music is percussion, drums and rhythms and just like when I first popped the earlier EPs into the CD player this new album has managed to make me drop my jaw with almost every single track. From the impressive syncopated tom-roll in “Anarchy OK” to the straight up off-beat hihats in the verses of “My Enemy” finally laying down for the almost raggae feel of “Naming the Elephant”, Lucius Borich does not fail to to impress.

I think they made a very wise decision by working with Sylvia Massy Shivy (worked with Tool, Sevendust, RHCP, Deftones etc) as I’m sure that had the album been produced by someone with different past experiences the resultant sound would’ve been quite different. Not to say the final sound is unique to them, because it is not - but it certainly sounds great, especially when compared to the EPs. I guess that is to be expected though.

I’ve enjoyed this album in my car, on the iPod and cranked at home and seems to sound good wherever I listen to it. It gets me tapping - it gets me singing. Great album!
